Madison let the hotel room door close behind her, her eyes falling to Paytonâs jeans and the way they hugged her ass.
Too much wine.
She exhaled softly as she lifted her pajamas out of her suitcase and zipped it back up again, leaving it in the corner of the room.
She was aware of Payton, half in the living room and half in the bedroom, as if she wanted to talk.
Madison could have ignored her, retreating into the bathroom to get changed but she turned instead, meeting her eyes, unable to read them.
Sheâd been so caught up in herself, in dreading what Jen would ask next, in hating the way her body responded to Paytonâs touch, something Madison had told her was okay, but what had tonight been like for Payton?
âI know that was longer than expected,â Madison said, noticing on the way up in the elevator that it was after eleven. âBut did you have an okay night?â
âYeah.â Payton visibly swallowed. âYeah, I did. It was strange how not weird that was, if that makes sense.â
Madison shrugged.
âOr was it? For you,â Payton said, her hands in the pockets of her jeans, still hovering under the archway.
âIt wasâ¦â What had tonight been? Difficult in some ways, more because she didnât want Jen asking her about her life now. But in other ways, it was good to see that Jen had moved on, that she didnât seem to harbor any resentment towards Madison. âFine.â
âFine?â
Madison left her pajamas on the bed behind her, her hands on her hips. âIâm glad we got it out of the way. That we wonât have to do any of that âcatching upâ business during the wedding.â
âOkay. I think itâs safe to say that we passed the test. Iâm pretty sure Jen bought it.â
âHm.â Madison was not interested in a play-by-play of the eveningâs events.
âYou seemed to get into it, at the end.â
Madison inhaled a shaky breath. Had Payton noticed how sheâd reacted every time Payton touched her?
âThink you need the help of alcohol though,â Payton added when Madison remained silent. âMight need to start early at the wedding.â She was smiling, but Madison took it as criticism, that she hadnât done as good of a job tonight as Payton had.
âYeah, well,â Madison said with a sigh. âWe canât all be actresses.â
âExcept you knew that I wasnât acting.â
Madison blinked. âWhat?â
âThatâs the real reason you asked me to do this, right? Because you knew I was attracted to you.â
Madison raked a hand through her hair. What made her think that Payton wouldnât see through her plan? âIâm sorry.â That was all she could manage to say. Because it was true. She had been feeling guilty, and there was no point in denying it now.
Payton nodded. âI can see how easy this made things for you. Choosing me.â
âUnless, of course, you hate me by the end of this trip,â Madison said.
âI should probably be mad at you.â Payton took a few steps into the room. âBut like I said, I get it.
